Treatment

To treat sexual dysfunction, you first need to understand the source of the problem. Is it a physical or medical issue? Is it something emotional or psychological? Does your relationship need some therapeutic intervention?

If the underlying cause of male sexual dysfunction turns out to be physical, meaning if a man cannot get or maintain an erection, medications and therapeutic treatments may be available that could help. For example, medications known as phosphodiesterase inhibitors relax the smooth muscles in the penis and allow for more blood to flow through, which enables an erection.

For female sexual dysfunction caused by physical conditions, such as vaginal dryness, hormone therapies may help. The nonphysical aspects of female sexual dysfunction also need attention. Get to know your body and its sexual responses or triggers. If you think you may have sexual dysfunction, don't hesitate to speak to a doctor, specialist, or other health care provider that you feel comfortable with. There are plenty of resources out there to help you educate yourself about pleasure.
