It's ironic that the word "fun" is hidden inside the term "sexual dysfunction." For those who have difficulty experiencing some or all of the pleasurable stages of sexual activity, fun is not the word to describe it. This frustrating and sometimes embarrassing-to-talk-about problem affects men and women alike.
In men, sexual dysfunction most often means erectile dysfunction (ED). Far more common among older men, ED occurs when a man has trouble getting or sustaining an erection of the penis; this means that
the penis is not firm enough for penetration.
Erections are brought on by a release of chemicals from both the penis and the brain. And on the path from brain to penis, any number of factors can obstruct the message from reaching its mark. Causes of ED include surgery, smoking, diabetes, circulatory problems, or alcoholism.
Female sexual dysfunction can be just as complex. There are different types of female sexual dysfunction, which can be diagnosed based on the stage that a woman experiences her symptoms. Some women may lack a desire for sexual activity, while others may have difficulty becoming aroused or have trouble reaching orgasm. Pain during sexual intercourse is also a form of sexual dysfunction.
A number of things can cause female sexual dysfunction. There is a psychological and emotional component to female sexual dysfunction, but some of the physical causes include yeast infections, vaginitis, changes due to menopause, multiple sclerosis, or hypothyroidism. Medications and past surgical procedures can also contribute to the problem.
When dealing with sexual dysfunction, relationships may be affected and anxieties may develop. ED and sexual dysfunction can cause a snowball effect that leads to even greater stress and minimal sexual pleasure.
If you think you may have sexual dysfunction, check with your doctor. They can help you eliminate any physical causes and may be able to refer you to the right health care professional to help you. You shouldn't worry needlessly when there may be options for treatment and recovery.
